Avoiding toxicity in building materials parallels the mission of affordable housing developers to promote occupant health and wellness. However, the soft costs of finding Living Building Challenge (LBC) compliant products remain a variable that can deter project teams working under constrained budgets. In addition, specific materials challenges exist in affordable housing. This workshop will demystify the process of finding products that are Red-List Free, Declare FSC-certified, locally sourced, and/or salvaged. Through participatory research activities, attendees will learn best pratices and procedures for vetting and selecting materials and have the opportunity to test run the latest materials databases and tools that will help reduce product research time. Attendees will also gain knowledge about competitively priced compliant products currently available on the market to use in their project.
