Healthy Materials in Affordable Housing: Creating Demand + Amplifying Impact
Track: Green Chemistry + Health

For over six years, the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) has been partnering with leading affordable housing developers and organizations, including Enterprise Green Communities, to promote and explore the implementation of the Living Building Challenge in affordable housing. Enterprise Green Communities (EGC) has long been a driving force in the industry for sustainable affordable housing. Their 2015 Criteria has been adopted as QAP criteria in many states, setting stringent guidelines for energy and water efficiency, as well as materials health. For their 2019 update, EGC has partnered with ILFI to align their materials criteria with Declare, the Red List, and other ILFI programs. This panel will explore the intended outcome of the partnership, including how simultaneously raising the floor and the ceiling will lead to industry revolution. The panel will feature affordable housing developers and architects, as well as representatives from EGC and ILFI. It will tell the story of how project teams around the nation have pioneered the implementation of Living Building Challenge-compliant materials through regional materials that are contextually appropriate and promote the economy of the local community. Acknowledging failures and successes, the speakers will extrapolate lessons learned and provide replicable and pragmatic strategies for future projects to realize their goals of creating healthful environments free from harmful toxins.

Getting Ahead of Chemicals of Concern with HPDs and GreenScreen
Track: Creating Healthy Buildings

Organizations of many kinds are creating lists of chemicals of concern and related restrictions, from regulatory agencies to manufacturers, brands, large scale purchasers, retailers, and NGOs. It can be overwhelming to track and manage these lists. Existing lists are constantly changing, and new lists are being continuously created. Health Product Declarations (HPDs) and GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals provide robust and holistic platforms for defining chemicals in products, identifying chemicals of concern in products, and optimizing products from design to manufacture. In this session we will delve into the details of HPDs and GreenScreen, and how designers and manufacturers are using these tools to optimize their products.
